  16. <p>Is Air America bad history?
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     Talk about negative reviews. First Air America, the Mel
  19. Gibson-goes-gonzo-in-Indochina summer spectacular, was
  20. generally panned by the critics. Then last week it was even
  21. more savagely attacked by journalists and authors in the New
  22. York Times and the Wall Street Journal. At issue was the real
  23. Air America, the CIA-run airline that ferried arms and supplies
  24. to anti-communist forces in Indochina during the Vietnam War.
  25. As flippantly depicted in the movie, the airline serves as a
  26. front for heroin smuggling condoned by the CIA in order to fund
  27. the U.S.'s secret war in Laos. This version, the articles point
  28. out, does violence not only to the many props that are blown
  29. up, but also to the real-life pilots of Air America and to the
  30. historical record.

  32. <p>     The Times piece, written by Christopher Robbins, author of
  33. the book on which the movie was based, noted that "the CIA did
  34. not lack funds for its war in Laos, and the U.S. embassy in
  35. Vientiane went to considerable lengths to control and curtail
  36. the [drug] trade." In the Journal, publisher Peter Kann, who
  37. was a reporter in Vietnam, and Phillip Jennings, a former Air
  38. America pilot, called the movie a "political obscenity" that
  39. smears Air America pilots as buffoons. "This drivel is scripted
  40. with all the subtlety of an Animal House cast reciting passages
  41. from Jane Fonda's Hanoi diaries."

  43. <p>     Air America screenwriter John Eskow counters that Robbins
  44. is "morally despicable," having lost a bid to be credited as
  45. co-author of the screenplay. Says Eskow: "The book wasn't
  46. interesting enough to serve as the movie's sole springboard.
  47. I had to do other research. I spoke to Air America pilots here
  48. and went to Thailand." Besides, he argues, a screenplay "is a
  49. creative act. It is not a documentary, and it doesn't advertise
  50. itself that way."

  52. <p>     For better or worse, however, movies help shape our view of
  53. history; those that distort sensitive issues, as this one does,
  54. do a disservice that cannot be justified by calling it
  55. creative. There is a difference between artistic license and
  56. simply license.
